Stanford Medicine Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity Discussion Group

Mission Statement

The purpose of this book club is to provide a professional development opportunity to Stanford Medicine Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity (SMADIE) members and allies interested in learning about new topics and continuing conversations from SMADIE programs. Focused questions will provide a structure for safe discussions around intersectional topics and issues related to disability in science and medicine. Book club meetings will also provide an additional networking opportunity for SMADIE members.

How to Participate

All discussion groups meet via Zoom. Please register in advance. Details and instructions for joining the Zoom meeting will be sent the day before the discussion group.

Please visit the SMADIE website to learn more about upcoming events.

Ground Rules

  • Everyone has an equal voice.
  • Listen for understanding.
  • Assume good will.
  • Suspend judgment.
  • Create a brave space for candid conversations. (A “brave space” is one in which people can take risks and speak candidly, but also one in which people who need to say “that hurt my feelings” can also say so.)
  • Seek first to understand, then to be understood.
  • Share air time.
  • Ask questions.
  • If you are offended or uncomfortable, say so, and say why.
  • It’s OK to disagree, but don’t personalize. No name calling or stereotyping.
  • Speak for yourself, not for others.
  • What’s said here stays here other than broad themes – protect identities and people’s stories.
  • Share responsibility for making this dialogue work.
