Quick Start Research Toolkit

In addition to its rich collection of digital resources, Lane Library also provides an extensive array of research support services to the Stanford Medicine faculty, students, and staff. These include:

• Virtual help via Ask Us or live chat: Get answers to your access and research questions via email or instant messaging.
• Research services: Consult with a librarian on a variety of topics, including literature searches, data management, etc.

Lane Library's Liaison Program pairs the departments, institutes, and student groups of Stanford University Medical Center with individual librarians who are familiar with the perspectives and knowledge of their assigned departments and specialties.

• Liaisons can help identify unique resources from our collection that you may not be aware of.

• They advocate for the special needs of your department; including, journal/book collection development, and specialty web-portal design.

• They provide in-depth, one-on-one or small-group consulting on information management tools and strategies.

• They develop, refine and perform complex literature reviews in a wide array of databases.

Literature Searching, Citation Management, and One-on-one or Small Group Instruction

• Literature Searching: complex literature reviews (systematic reviews; meta-analyses; clinical practice guidelines, etc.); database auto-alerts; citation management (e.g. EndNote, RefWorks, Zotero) and screening with Covidence.

• One-one or small group consultations: Request via AskUs or your department's library liaison.

Classes and Discussion Groups

• Regularly scheduled classes and customized, on-demand sessions for faculty, students, and staff.

• Course topics include: "quick start" overview of key library resources and services; tips and strategies for enhancing the impact of your research; introduction to data sharing; keeping current; PubMed basics; advanced searching beyond PubMed; introduction to the command line; locating measures, scales and surveys.

• Discussion group topics include Anti-racism Book Club and the Stanford Medicine Open Science Reading Group.

Author and Publishing Support

• Learn about unique author identifiers and how to create an ORCID ID.

• How to find journals relevant to areas of research/interest for possible submission.

• How to find journal impact factors.

• Help find instructions for authors.

• Explore alternate publishing models including open access journals.

• How to verify citations.

• Request via AskUs or your department's library liaison.

Data Services

• Assistance in complying with requirements related to the management and sharing of research data (e.g. from a publisher or funder).

• Consultations related to research data management, data security, data publishing, data curation, and long-term preservation.
